About the Event

This event aims to unpack the humanitarian crisis in Ethiopia's Tigray region. Tigray is the northernmost region in Ethiopia. Since fighting began on November 4th, 2020, an estimated 60,000 people have fled to neighboring Sudan to seek refuge. As a result of this conflict, thousands of people have died, millions of people have been displaced,looting is rampant, and sexual violence against women and children is widespread. Additionally, international humanitarian aid organizations report that there are severe shortages of food, water, and medicine across the region. Please join us as we aim to highlight the humanitarian crisis in the region that is affecting nearly five million people. Our event will be held virtually on Zoom and begins promptly on Sunday, February 7 at 1PM EST | 12PM CST | 10AM PST | 6PM GMT | 7PM CET | 9PM EAT.

Our guest speakers include:

  • U.S. Ambassador to Ethiopia, David Shinn served as the U.S. Ambassador to Ethiopia from 1996-1999. He served as a Foreign Service Officer at the State Department for 37 years. He is currently an Adjunct Professor at George Washington University.
  • U.S. Ambassador to Ethiopia, Aurelia Brazeal served as the U.S. Ambassador to Ethiopia from 2002-2005. She served as a Foreign Service Officer at the State Department for 40 years, and earned the rank of Career Minister. She is an expert in crisis management, strategic planning, leadership, and management.
  • Meaza Gidey is an international relations researcher and a human rights activist. She is the co-founder of Yikono, a grassroots movement striving to prevent and end gender-based violence against young girls and women in Tigray, Ethiopia.
  • Getachew Gebrekiros Temare earned a law degree and currently serves as a conflict resolution researcher and analyst. He is a human rights defender and advocate.
  • Samuel Gebru is the Director of Policy and Public Affairs at the Black Economic Council of Massachusetts, the Commonwealth's leading organization advancing the economic interests of Black businesses, organizations, and individuals. He also serves as the Managing Director of Black Lion Strategies, a boutique social impact consulting firm building on his over 15 years of political and nonprofit experience in the United States and Ethiopia.
