About the Event
We will learn from our guest historians about how transitions of power unfolded, the larger sociopolitical context of the region at the time, and how their reigns laid the groundwork for future governments. Our event will be held virtually on Zoom and begins promptly on Sunday, March 28, at 1PM EST | 12PM CST | 10AM PST | 6PM BST | 7PM CET | 8PM EAT.
Our guest speakers include:
- Dr. Hanna Rubinkowska-Anioł received her Doctorate in History at the University of Warsaw. The title of her doctoral dissertation was: "The Reign of Zewditu, Empress of Ethiopia, 1916-1930". She received her Master’s degree in Cultural Studies obtained at the Faculty of Modern Languages, Institute of Oriental Studies, University of Warsaw. She specialized in African and Ethiopian Studies.
- Dr. Ahmed Hassen is a professor at Addis Ababa University in Ethiopia. He received his PhD at the Université Paris I-Panthéon Sorbonne, 2007. He was the former Director of the Institute of Ethiopian Studies. He is the co-author of Lij Iyasu: A Reformist Young Prince and author of Evaluating Muslim Ethiopia: The Christian Legacy, Identity Politics, and Islamic Reformism
- Dr. Eloi Ficquet is a lecturer at EHESS and is the Chair of the Comparative History and Anthropology of the Horn of Africa. His research interests include: power and religions in Ethiopia and the Horn of Africa, 19th-21st centuries, literature of Ethiopian muslims (written and spoken), and identity and cultural policy in contemporary Ethiopia. He is the author of The Life and Times of Lij Iyasu of Ethiopia: New Insights.
